A sting operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a high-end Lagos estate turned tragic this week, resulting in the death of a resident.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 4, at the Periwinkle Estate in Lekki Phase 1. The EFCC has since released an official statement to clarify the circumstances that led to the death of the resident, identified as Endurance Udeke.
According to the anti-graft agency, its operatives were conducting a “smooth sailing” operation in the estate, which led to the arrest of four suspected internet fraudsters. However, the situation took a fatal turn at apartment W6a.
A Desperate Escape Attempt
The Commission stated that Udeke and another resident in the same apartment became aware of the ongoing operation and attempted a desperate escape from arrest. In a tragic decision, both men reportedly jumped from their four-storey building.
While the second resident survived after being stabilised and treated at a hospital, Udeke did not survive the fall, despite receiving medical intervention at the scene.
EFCC Releases Official Statement
In its release, the EFCC expressed shock at the “suicidal action of the deceased” and emphasized that there was no direct contact between its officers and Udeke before the incident.
The Commission also stated that it has informed Udeke’s family of the details and that the family appreciated the efforts made to save his life. Furthermore, the Police have been notified and have launched an investigation into the death.
The EFCC concluded its statement with a reminder to the public, asserting that “no one with nothing to hide has reason to be afraid of an EFCC sting operation.”
The event has sparked significant discussion online, highlighting the extreme pressures and dire outcomes that can sometimes accompany law enforcement activities.
